Catwalk or runway is a very important term in the fashion world. However, one should not confuse runway with the path from where airplanes take-off or land. The runway is essentially the platform where model walk wearing various clothing and accessories in order showcase their creations of various designers. The runway is a narrow elevated platform where the models stroll. The both sides of a fashion runway are flanked by seating areas for the guests who attend the show. A catwalk must have some basic design consideration to serve the purpose of a fashion show.
The platform of fashion show has essentially three parts:
• Stage: It is the area from where the models make their entry.
• Runway: It is the narrow are where the models walk flaunting the designs.
• The ‘T’: It is the area in front of the runway, which is perpendicular to it. This is where the model showcases the designers’ creation during the finale.
The seating happens on both sides of the runway and in front of the ‘T’. The ergonomics state that the stage and the runway should extend till only two-thirds of the length of the auditorium for maximum visual capacity.
The width of the runway depends on how many models would walk simultaneously. Depending on the numbers, they can be 4 ’, 6’ or 8’ wide. However, it can be customized as per the requirements of the show and the ergonomics. The stage should be designed in such a way that it accentuates the design and the fashion, which is being showcased.
